Tesla

Nikola Tesla was born into a serbian family in the Austrian Empire in 1856. He was fairly educated and decided from an early age that he would become an electrical engineer. He lived a life of crazy inventions, and with the constant need to improve on his work. He has been called the mad scientist of our times, and no one can compare to his lack of rationality. He always put himself in the middle of danger, mostly because he knew he would leave unharmed. Although the Tesla Coil was one of the most renown inventions Nikola had, he went on to make households electrical by streaming long wires through the structure of a mansion, and leading all the power lines to a steam engine generator that would lay outside the home. It was very likely that there would be problems with this set up, and in many cases there were. He even set fire to a mansion when the electrical wires sparked. Beyond all of this, Tesla made a name for himself, and even today, he never ceases to amaze.

  1. How does the Tesla Coil relate to steam engines? I understand that the electricity lead to power lines in the steam engine generator, but can you explain further?

  2. Austin, could you cite some of your sources? I'm also confused about the reference to steam engine generators, and after a quick google search I couldnt find anything that mentioned Tesla setting fire to a mansion. The only thing that I found regarding a fire and tesla, was that a lab he was working in was burned down and he lost a lot of his research.

  3. Do you think that Tesla Motors, makers of the electric car, was named after Nikola Telsa. Seems logical.

  4. Elle: Nikola Tesla used a steam engine to run a sort of motor, then he would attach the motor to the generator to turn the device, thus giving him alternating current.

Cy: The part about the mansion burning down relates to a story that has been told by the friends of Tesla. Apparently Tesla tried to put electricity in a man's mansion. And it all worked fine until there was a spark in the library that burned most of the mansion to the ground.

Cal: Tesla Motors was indeed named after Nikola Tesla. Tesla Motors writes that they are doing what Tesla would've done. You can check it on their site.
