Extra Credit Blog
The role of government in my opinion goes as this; the rich basically pay for the basic needs of the poor. The families that have a low income are taxed less and therefore are not paying the government as much as say, Menlo families. I agree that if people don't pay taxes the economy will fail because the money will not being passed around, yet I do believe (like Cy said in class) that we should be spending money for things that WE want. I do not think that the rich people or families with a high income should be paying for the health of lower class citizens. If they wanted a better job and more money, they should have worked harder in school and gained knowledge while they could. Just like everyone says, Knowledge is Power.

I think that this is true but some people aren't provided with sufficient education. They might not get enough for what ever reason, possibly money or family issues, and therefore they can't get a good job to provide for their families. I am not sure what you talked about in class because i was out sick but I agree that the rich should not have to pay for the poor but the poor sometimes can't choose whether or not they are poor. It isn't fair for the rich to work hard and then not benefit from all from all of their reward (income) because they have to pay for the poor. For example, if a man works and get his monthly salary and then has to pay part of that to provide for the poorer people, then maybe he won't have enough to go on a trip with his family and travel because his money has gone to someone who doesn't have enough. It sounds bad and selfish but it makes sense because you want to know that you are getting a good reward for the hard work you have put in. The rich people, if they are having to pay a lot like 50% of what they earn to the poor then they might figure why work because they could just hang out at home and be provided for. I think that a little is nice for the people who don't have the choice of having a well paying job but too much will defeat the point of working. Back to the poor people, I think that if they get provided for too much then they will not learn that they have to work hard to get what they want. Both of these, if the rich have to contribute to the poor too much and if the poor are getting too much, then they will both end up not working and then the whole situation won't even work. So there needs to be balance between the two, giving and taking.
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure you are agreeing with what I am saying just elaborating more. But as I mentioned as my last sentence is if they wanted more money and a better job they should have worked harder in school. Public schools are free to everyone who wants to go to a public school, therefore having money for education is not an excuse to not being able to get into college.

ReplyDeleteI do agree that public school is offered to everyone but that doesn't necessarily mean the students will be eligible for a job after. If they lack money then they may have to be working to earn money for their family and therefore that cuts into their school work time. They may not get good grades because they have to take care and supply their family with money so they may not have the grades it takes to get into some colleges. I was just saying that not everyone is given a home and food and everything they need to be able to go to school and have a successful job after. There are people with situations that don't allow them to succeed in school and excel like others can. I hope this makes sense. sorry if I am repeating what you have already said.
ReplyDeleteEllie, does this mean that you are against Obama's health care package? This is an example of the rich paying for the poor. Should the poor not recieve medical coverage just because they were not educated, or not educated as well? Good arguements for both sides.
