I agree with Cy's point of how we just completely allow the government to do everything for us and how we trust them too much. But I also agree with Marjory's point on how if we didn't have government everything would be chaos. I think that no matter what we need a leader. It is in our DNA we need someone leading us and helping us out. In every type of group there is a leader. The one who makes most of the decisions. Even dogs have leaders. Alpha Dogs are basically dogs that are programmed to lead, which for some random reason think that they are the leader and that everyone should follow them. If fish didn't have a leader how would schools decide where to go and to stay together. Even if we have no taxes and no government I think we would still need a leader. Which sort of shows that I am a follower since I believe so strongly that I couldn't make decisions on my own. Or maybe it just shows how immature I really am.

ReplyDeleteJohn,
ReplyDeleteIf your'e saying that government is justified and necessary simply because we find examples of hierarchical structures in nature, than thats completely absurd. Just because dogs have leaders doesn't mean we should. Dogs violently kill things, should we do that? Dogs don't have advanced levels of technology or linguistic abilities, does that mean we should abandon our achievements in order to become more like dogs?
The alpha dog is determined by whichever dog is the most physically dominant. Should that be how we run societies, so that only the strongest survive and rule? Also, there is no conclusive evidence that schools of fish have leaders.
Your argument from nature doesn't hold any weight because even if animals do have leaders, it doesn't mean we should. Also, there are plenty of examples of animals in the natural world who live and thrive on their own, without any kind of leader. Lastly, we don't come from fish or dogs, we just share a common ancestor.
Its not in our DNA to have a leader who helps us out. And even if it was, we have free will. We can choose who we want to rule over us.
Lastly, you're wrong in thinking that you can't make your own decisions. Does the government tell you who to marry? How to spend your free time? What career to pursue? Would you murder people if there was no government? Clearly you have some capacity to control your own decisions, and you already live in a state of 'anarchy' with no government involvement, in many spheres of your life.
