Indian Rebellion

Through 1857-1858 a milestone rebellion happened in India. A new catridge that had animal fat (cow and pig) all over it deeply offended both Muslims and Hindus. Hindus were very upset because cows are a sacred animal and Hindus find pigs disgusting. The two religions joined together to rebel against the oppresive british rule. This completely changd the reltaionship between Britain and India. Before there was the East India Company and they had a lose control over India, just making sure that they got what items were necessary for British export. After the British actually tried to change some aspects of Indian society based on their fear that another huge rebellion would come. Of course this was completely idiotic because by doing that, people were even more offfended and untrustworthy of the British.

  1. Marjory, this post gives me a better understanding about why the Indians rebelled. It makes sense about the cow, because last year we learned what was sacred to the Hindus and how cows were VERY sacred. I thought it was interesting that the two religions created a like cult to rebel against the rules. It was interesting to learn that tidbit Thanks!!

  2. Why would the Muslims be offended by pig fat? If they truly hated pigs wouldn't they be content that a pig had been slaughtered? I may be missing the point here but it seems to me that the Muslims were upset about something that would make them happy.

  3. It's because Muslims can't eat pork, but they have to bite off the casing of the cartridge. It is the casing that was coated in animal fat. We'll talk more about various colonial uprising next semester. There's a great bollywood movie about the Sepoy Rebellion called Mangal Pandey, I think.
