What i have learned this year

I think the most interesting thing that i learned this year was about World War I. I remember asking my parents a couple years ago how that war started and they had no idea. After looking into it myself, i learned that the only war not represented in the National Mall is World War I. I think that just because we entered the war late, does not mean that we should not pay tribute to the thousands of soldiers that lost their lives. It was a terrible war, not just for Europe but for the whole world. It was a one of the first wars of attrition and for that reason i think that it should be one of the most well known wars. Everyone seems to pay much more attention to World War II because of AMerica's role in it, but i think that people should learn more about WWI. It was intersting to learn how with just one assasination, all of Europe was involved with a 5 year war that led to the lost generation in many countries. Italy switched sides last minute from the central powers to the allies, something that i think shows their disloyalty to allies. Many terrible things happened in WWI, including a small pox epidemic in America.

  1. I don't think we should be paying tribute to murderers. Why should we honor men who signed up to kill people, many of which were innocent civilians? War is a crime. Our actions in WWI were not actions of self defense, they were actions of aggression and violence.

  2. In my opinion, some wars are started because politicians and governments disagree about something, so they start a war, where many people die for pointless reasons.

  3. Good point Mark. It really doesn't make sense that so many people should kill each other for issues between two governments. A war should only occur if the majority of the population agrees to it. I also like Cy's idea of making war a crime and making it so that it is just not allowed.

  4. I can understand a religious war, because if one religion is taking over another, or if one religion occupies another's "Holy Land", you would want to do anything to protect your religion or recapture the "Land of God".

  5. I completely disagree with you Mark. Church should not be incorporated in government at all so that their is less issues like the one you mentioned above. A lot of the wars that some countries enter are because of religious governments, and if there wasn't any religious governments this would prevent many of the wars that go on.

  6. I'm not saying I believe church and state should be united. I'm saying religions should decide on the wars they fight, and that state shouldn't dictate that.

  7. Yeah I see what you're saying. Its just really weird that religions choose to fight with each other. Usually religions are meant to give us good morals, and killing is obviously not morally correct. Religions are though of more as peaceful than violent. In what other way could religions resolve their problems?

  8. Religions don't even give us good morals. If you read the Koran, Bible, Torah, etc. you'd know this. Its shocking to me how few Christians, for example, are aware that their god murders millions, advocates slavery and other evil acts. Also, religious warfare is unacceptable, as it is rooted in irrationality, like almost all wars.

  9. Cy, according to my research, there was indeed a draft in WWI. Obviously, this means that not everyone in the war signed up to fight. The people who were drafted had no choice but to fight for their country. Do you really think that the people who didn't choose for this to happen to them were murderers? I don't think it is fair to pin such a heavy name on people who only wanted to serve their country and protect the citizens, or maybe didn't even want anything to do with the war in the first place.
