MWH Extra Credit Blog

This year in Modern World History I learned numerous amounts of concepts that will benefit me throughout my life. Some of the major ideas that I am going to remember for a very long time is the Industrial Revolution and the amazing machines that came with it. The Industrial Revolution as a whole was thrilling to hear about and how it really started a new era. The machines that were manufactured during the Industrial Revolution are still used today and if we had not had this industrial boom, we would not be like how we are today. I still am amazed by the way they put on a Great Exhibition in order to show off the outstanding pieces of machinery. People from all over the world came to see the Great Exhibition, which means the Industrial Revoultion affected not only France, but the entire world. Furthermore, I was really surprised about how much France impacted the United States when it came to technology.

  1. I definitely agree. The world exibitions are something that i wish were still around today. It was a way for every country to feel proud of the many accomplishments it had made. I thing one thing it could be compared to today are the olympics. Every country has representation and although it is a contest, it is a time for countries of the world to unite just as they did in the world exibitions.

  2. I also liked the exhibitions and I think more activities where you could walk around and interact would be good because I really enjoyed those. I think the nation game was sort of fun but it wasn't quite established enough to stay. It would have been fun if it had a little more structure like if we sectioned it into time periods or something and then learned about what other countries actually did rather than just our make believe places.

  3. Great post. This Industrial Revolution had effects on many aspects of life. It made agriculture easier,by replacing manual labor with machines. It also made transportation and trade a lot faster by using steam powered ships instead of walking by foot, or by horse. Although these are really good advancements in society, there were also negative effects on society. One of these is the child labor issue.

  4. Unfortunately child labor a huge issue. The conditions of the factories often caused children to injure themselves permanently or even kill themselves. The factory wasn't a safe place for kids.

  5. Yeah good point Mark. Not only were they unsafe, but they were also unsanitary. I believe that the Industrial Revolution caused this problem of child labor to occur because people started to leave the farms because manual work was no longer needed. There was overpopulation, and because of this there was severe poverty. Children had to work in order to not starve.

  6. Such atrocities wouldn't have happened if the government didn't create monopolies and regulate the private sector. Because limited monopolies in the form of copyright were created, there were restrictions on what could be created and by whom. Also, slave trade and natural resources helped fuel the revolution.
